STATEMENT: Small Business Group Urges Congress To Take Swift Action On Debt Ceiling 

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-Chair Anne Zimmerman, a small business CPA, about the urgent need to raise the country’s debt ceiling limit



Jan. 19, 2023– As the federal government approaches negotiations to raise its debt ceiling so the country can pay its debts, we urge lawmakers not to toy with the full faith and credit of the United States. It would cause more economic turbulence in an already challenging moment for Main Street small businesses. Lawmakers should raise the debt ceiling with haste and without economically damaging and unnecessary drama. 

This pressing matter should not be used as leverage for other political issues because the livelihood of so many on Main Street could be hurt by the economic fallout. Small business owners are emerging from the effects of the pandemic and dealing with inflation. Another obstacle could be the breaking point for some entrepreneurs. 

Over a decade ago, debate on this issue caused higher borrowing costs for businesses and home buyers, and immense volatility in the stock market. 

With low unemployment, strong hiring and record-setting small business starts, our economy is showing reason for optimism. We should not derail that with an arduous debate over raising the debt ceiling that raises doubts about whether the United States will make good on its debts. Loan defaults now could send us into a recession that could have devastating effects on the world economy. 

It's time for lawmakers to put their differences aside and remember the people they were elected to serve. Bipartisanship is the key pathway to preventing historical damage to our economy.
