STATEMENT: Small business group applauds announcement of bipartisan federal paid leave working group

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Small Business Council member Tiara Flynn, CEO of Sumnu Marketing and Phenomenal Mamma in Las Vegas, NV, on the announcement of a working group focused on federal paid leave

Washington, D.C., Dec. 19, 2023 – “We applaud the announcement of a bipartisan paid leave working group’s request for information to learn more about ideas for expanding access to paid parental, caregiving, and personal medical leave in a bipartisan, fiscally responsible and sustainable way. It’s encouraging to see this after a similar bipartisan effort in the House that included a roundtable with small business owners earlier this year. A bicameral effort is essential to building effective solutions that help hard working families. Paid family leave will empower Main Street businesses to retain and hire high-caliber talent enabling them to compete with large companies.

“As a certified labor and birth doula, I understand the significance of bonding time for parents. Paid family leave provides much-needed security for workers and families by reducing the financial stress that parents often face when considering taking time off to nurture their growing families. By supporting meaningful efforts to expand paid leave, we are fostering an environment where people can prioritize their families without the added burden of financial uncertainty. This is not only a benefit for families but also a strategic advantage for small businesses, enabling them to attract and retain quality employees.

“Entrepreneurs recognize that offering paid leave is a critical resource for their workforce that will improve the well-being of workers and boost morale – but the cost of doing so is often prohibitive. Without innovative solutions that look to level the playing field.

“Strengthening small business owners' ability to compete for and retain talent will help create a strong small business economy that benefits everyone. Small businesses provide jobs and economic activity in every community across the nation and investing in their success helps us all. We look forward to the policy discussions that will center the small business employer perspective.”
