Small Business Group: Voting Rights and Strong Democracy Key for Entrepreneurship & Small Business to Thrive
Statement by Rhett Buttle, Senior Advisor to Small Business for America’s Future
Washington, D.C., July 13, 2021—Business owners agree: a thriving economy relies on a healthy democracy. We are encouraged by President Biden’s forthcoming remarks today in Philadelphia calling for a “new coalition” of leaders -- including businesses -- to stand up in support of protecting and expanding our voting rights. A recent Small Business for American’s Future (SBAF) survey this May found that 74% of small business owners surveyed support lawmakers taking action to protect and expand voting rights.
This is why we also applaud state elected officials in Texas yesterday who took bold action to protect these rights by blocking efforts that would restrict voter access. Main Street knows that a strong small business sector requires a government that is responsive and accountable to their constituents. As influential voices in their communities, small business owners and leaders have an important role in both defending against harmful voter suppression, and advocating for federal legislation to protect our democracy.
