Small Business Group: Getting COVID Under Control Must Be Our No. 1 Priority; Encouraged by Biden Plan 

Statement by Dr. Erika Gonzalez, Co-Chair of Small Business for America’s Future and CEO, President, & Co-Founder of South Texas Allergy and Asthma Medical Professionals (STAAMP) and STAAMP Clinical Research

Washington, D.C., Jan. 14, 2021—We are greatly relieved to hear President-elect Joe Biden today announce an emergency response plan that includes a coordinated effort to ramp up vaccinations, fight the spread of the coronavirus, reopen schools, and deliver more relief to help small business owners and ordinary Americans survive the economic fallout of the pandemic. In addition to saving the lives of thousands of people, implementing such a plan will finally allow small businesses and our economy to embark on the road to recovery.

Biden’s plan will deliver grants and low-interest loans that small businesses, particularly underserved small businesses, continue to need. Workers, who are small business customers, will see enhanced Earned Income Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits, as well as receive enhanced unemployment benefits if they are laid off. The plan to contain the pandemic and reopen schools will allow entrepreneurs to make plans to survive, rebuild and recover from the economic damage caused by Covid-19. The Trump Administration's failure to implement such a plan for nearly a year has led to ongoing economic pain that has jeopardized our entire small business economy and the health of our small business workforce. It is a great relief that we will not continue down this destructive path. 

Small business owners are pragmatic and understand the need for a national plan to contain the virus and are eager to follow the science to bring Covid-19 under control. A national Small Business for America’s Future survey of more than 1,500 entrepreneurs in July showed that 68% of small business owners said we need a nationwide plan for reopening safely, and 66% said such a plan would give businesses a better chance at surviving the pandemic.

President-elect Biden’s plan is a very positive step toward bringing the pandemic to an end and allowing our Main Streets to rebuild.
